Creating Figure Labels

The easiest way to create a figure label is to enable the Snap labels to figure label slots option and create a label in the usual way but over one of the figure's unoccupied figure label slots, or to drag an existing label onto a figure's unoccupied figure label slot. These methods have been described earlier in this chapter. The sense of the Snap labels to figure label primary position only option affects this as well. See Tools Options for details.

Another method to create a figure label is to use the Add Figure Label feature. This method is only for figure labels and does not require you to enable the Snap labels to figure label slots option.

We have disabled the Snap labels to figure label slots option by default because the presence of many figure label slots can be distracting and frustrating until you understand figure labels. If you become familiar with figure labels and want the added convenience you can enable this option. You can also limit the exposed figure label slots to only the one slot designated as the primary position by enabling the Snap labels to figure label primary position only option. The Add Figure Label feature and the Attach Label to Figure feature DO NOT require this option to be enabled and they still provide all of the power you need to work with figure labels.

To add a figure label to a figure

  1. Right click on the figure and choose Add Figure Label from the right-click menu.
  2. Choose a slot from the pop-up submenu (above, below, right, left, and so on). A label with default text “label” will be created in the slot you chose.
  3. Edit the label text as you like and press ESC when done.
